Red Cross Gives $100,000 Grant to Children’s Health Fund in Name of Superstorm Sandy

The American Red Cross has awarded $100,000 to Children's Health Fund to support mental health services for children and families affected by Superstorm Sandy in Brooklyn, New York last year.

The funding will be used to help over 500 children and their families in Gerritsen Beach with Sandy-related mental health challenges, to give them the opportunity to build the coping skills necessary to more fully recover from the traumatic experience.

Dr. Delaney Gracy, chief medical officer for Children’s Health Fund says the trauma that Hurricane Sandy brought is still palpable in Gerritsen Beach, and many of the community’s children are still processing the memory of how their own lives were affected during the storm, while trying to get used to the dislocation of their family, friends and valued possessions.

Red Cross of Greater New York CEO Josh Lockwood, says children can be affected by superstorms in ways that adults and health care providers overlook. That’s why the Red Cross grant will help support youth and families to help continue recovering.

State Senator Martin Golden is pleased to hear about Children’s Health Fund’s grant and collaboration with the Red Cross to help the community. More than a year after Sandy devastated many areas of New York, most people are still struggling mentally, physically and financially, and those hardships are felt even more during the holidays and cold weather.

Superstorm Sandy relief has been the largest U.S. operation by the Red Cross in more than five years. The Red Cross received over $308 million in donations for Sandy emergency relief and recovery efforts thanks to the US public’s generous support.
