Local Research Team Succeeds in Localizing PET-MRI for Early Diagnosis of Dementia

KAIST has announced its team led by Professor Cho Kyu-sung of Nuclear and Quantum Engineering to join researchers from Sogang University and others that they have successfully developed a PET-MRI Fusion Imaging System, to join the next-generation of medical imaging equipment.

The new PET-MRI technology combines an MRI’s anatomical imaging with a PET’s functional imaging, to allow for earlier diagnosis of cancer and especially dementia, with its ability to obtain both anatomical and functional status of the human body. It is considered the first key piece of equipment for new pharmaceutical product development of the year.

The current PET-MRI market has been dominated by a few foreign global enterprises, including GE, Siemens, and Philips. Medical facilities have had difficulties in the past installing the equipment and getting over the hump of high prices, ranging from $6.5 to $9.3 billion. The new research team expects to create a better development of the product to allow domestic facilities to easier own.

The team has also developed a new silicon photomultiplier sensor that can be used in strong magnetic fields and create a PET imaging restructuring program based on the sensors. In addition, the shielding system created to use a PET and MRI at once will also be available by June of next year.

According to research Cho, “using a PET-MRI will increase precision in early diagnosis of dementia and other brain diseases, as well as allow a groundbreaking reduction in check-up costs.”
