Bethesda, Maryland — November 15, 2013 — The 7th Annual Asian American Business Conference (AABC) wrapped up last week at the Greenbelt Marriott with a record number of attendees participating in the networking dinner and conference. Over 300 attendees included successful and new entrepreneurs who developed important contacts and were motivated to explore new business avenues.
The conference is jointly organized by the Governor's Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs, the Governor's Commission on South Asian American Affairs along with a diverse group of business and community leaders. "The Asian American Business community is a vital part of our statewide economic success and the continued growth of small and minority-owned businesses helps ensure the growth of Maryland's economy," said Lt. Governor Anthony Brown. "In the O'Malley-Brown administration, we believe in equal rights, inclusion, and respect for the dignity of every individual – it's these values that make Maryland an innovative and creative place for businesses to grow and create jobs."

One of the objectives of the business conference is facilitate networking among minority business owners, the local community and government officials to create mutually beneficial relationships. The networking dinner serves as a unique opportunity for contractors and buyers to engage with the Asian American Community. Heyward Hilliard, of Health Management Resources (HMR) stated, "having this opportunity to meet and to network with the representatives and business leaders in attendance was extremely beneficial." HMR employs over 1,500 people in its health care management business. "Our involvement in the AABC will lead to identifying ways to improve upon the services that we provide through shared resources and shared ideas."
Humberto Ho, Vice President, Ho Brothers Development said he was, "delighted to meet with the Deputy Secretary of State Peter Fosselman at the dinner who is also the Mayor of the town of Kensington. We discussed potential development opportunities in Kensington." Humberto and Mayor Fosselman have had several follow up discussions after the conference.
Cherian Eapen, founder of Temoss, LLC just recently received Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) status from the State of Maryland also made good connections at the conference and commented "I got some great business leads at the AABC networking dinner!"
Providing education on various topics to help strengthen the local Asian American business community is another key objective. Dot Wilson, Vice President of Floyd E. Wilson, Jr. & Associates, LLC enjoyed the conference seminars, remarking "the event provided valuable resources with special emphasis on current topics including Doing Business with the State of Maryland, Federal Government, SBA Financing, and Federal Programs to Assist U.S. Import & Export.
Over 30 sponsors and exhibitors supported the annual conference including the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development, clearview llc, Fidelity Bank, Montgomery County Department of Economic Development, New York Life, Pharmathene, State Farm, Sona Bank and The University of Maryland Medical Systems.
Secretary of Veteran Affairs and the Chair Emeritus of the AABC, Ed Chow commented, "it was an especially gratifying conference because the South Asian Commission, the Asian Commission, and other community leaders united to organize a conference around common issues supporting a wide diversity of local businesses."
