Regional research that was carried out by the Health and Safety Executive showed that 18 individuals died, while over 400 were injured, in construction projects since 2010.
The findings have since triggered the HSE to look into boosting the standards carried out by building-site project inspectors within the area. The inspectors will be visiting projects across the Norwich, Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft, Chelms , Basildon and Southend areas.
The new push comes as British builders are witnessing a “new dawn” in August following the construction sector saw growth at the fastest pace since the beginning of the worldwide recession.
Markit/CIPS purchasing manager's Index has shown a 59.1 reading throughout August, which is up from July's 57 reading. That signals the largest rise in output since 2007. House building has still remained the strongest sector, with rising rates not seen since 2010, and have been bolstered by the government's Help to Buy Scheme that has cheaper mortgage finances that sent buyers reaching for new developments.
HSE principal inspector for the Norfolk, Suffolk, and Essex area stated that the new increase in projects is all the more reason to focus on the safety of workers.
“Too many people die every year on Britain’s construction sites as a result of entirely avoidable incidents,” he said. “Just as importantly, the causes of ill health, such as unnecessary exposure to asbestos or silica dust can also have fatal or debilitating consequences.”
“Often we find it is smaller companies working on refurbishment and repair work who are failing to protect their workers through a lack of awareness and poor control of risks. This initiative provides a chance to engage with these firms to help them understand what they need to do, so they can put in place the practical measures needed to keep people safe.”
