Largo, Maryland. October 16, 2013. The India Business Center, a partnership between the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED) and the Prince George’s County Economic Development Corporation (EDC), officially opened its offices in Largo, Maryland, on October 2, 2013, and welcomed three Indian companies. The influx of Indian companies looking for “soft-landing” space in the U.S. is likely to continue, as three to four more Indian firms are expected to arrive in Largo, Maryland, around January, 2014.
Gwen S. McCall, President and CEO of EDC, welcomed the companies to their brand-new space, and stated, “Our goal is to create a smart, plug-and-play center for international companies. We are confident that through the comprehensive business services we provide, these companies will grow rapidly and create jobs here in the U.S., as well in their home country.” Ms. McCall also noted, “Under the leadership of our County Executive and his $50 Million EDI Fund, we have been able to create over 1,000 net new jobs and millions in new tax revenues.”
Mr. Dominick Murray, Secretary of DBED, highlighted the successes of the Governor’s 2011 business mission to India, and stated, “Our India team, headed by Deputy Secretary Robert Walker and India Manager Jessica Reynolds, has created a strong partnership with India, with Indian companies and Indian business organizations. It is our goal in Maryland to be the most business-friendly location for Indian companies as they seek to enter the U.S. market.”
Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III noted, “Today we are not only celebrating the ribbon-cutting of the India Business Center, we are also celebrating the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.” He noted how deeply moved he was when, as part of the Maryland business delegation to India, he visited “Raj Ghat” – the cremation place of the great leader, who had inspired not only him throughout his public service, but also great American leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King.
EDC’s Executive Vice President, Dr. Pradeep Ganguly, espoused on the joint EDC-DBED strategy for the India Business Center, and explained how its primary goal was to make “Maryland Made Easy” for international firms looking to enter the U.S. market. He noted, “Imagine, if we can make Maryland the location of choice for companies from India, as well as other BRICS nations and Europe, what we can do for smart companies in Texas, California and Massachusetts.” He continued to state, “We have spread our welcome mat for smart companies in information technology, cyber, space technology, and life sciences from Austin, Boston, Dallas-Ft. Worth, and San Jose. Come find out what “Maryland Made Easy” can do for you.” The packed audience was thrilled when Pradeep Ganguly emphasized, “After all, we are next door to the nation’s capital, with the highest median household income, top-rated schools like the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University, and the U.S. headquarters of the nation’s Cyber Command, as well as the FDA, NIH, NIST, NASA-Goddard, Joint Base Andrews, NOAA, and more.”
Asheesh Mani Jain, representing the newly-arrived Indian companies, Creative Lipi, AB Digital and Karmick Solutions, summed it up best, “I am a proud testament to what is being called “Maryland Made Easy”. We could have gone to any state; but, we chose Maryland for the business-friendly services, especially for International companies like us. I am very happy to be at the India Business Center.”
The event was attended by over 100 dignitaries, including Maryland Delegate Sam Arora, Dr. Raj Kumar representing the Ambassador of India, as well as scores of businesses, including the first three Indian companies – Karmick Solutions, AB Digital, and Creative Lipi. All dignitaries took part in the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the India Business Center and the reception that followed.
