Early this month a young man climbing a French glacier overlooking the southeastern French village of Chamonix found a cache of glittering jewels wrapped in bags stamped "Made in India." The jewels may be part of the cargo from the ill-fated airliner Malabar Princess, said Albertville police Chief Sylvain Merly on Thursday.
The climber, who asked to remain anonymous, discovered the jewels inside a metal box on the glacier, said Merly, and turned them in to the police in Bourg-Saint-Maurice on September 9. Merly would not describe the jewels but French media reports them as emeralds, sapphires and rubies. Authorities in France are trying to track down ownership of the jewels, which Merly says are worth between €130,000 (about $175,000) and €246,000 ($331,600). The 20-something mountain climber stands to receive a portion of their value if the owners cannot be found, says Merly.
In 1950, Air India Flight 245, the "Malabar Princess" crashed into Mont Blanc during a storm that killed all 48 aboard. It is suspected that the gems may be from that plane, which was planning to make a stop in Geneva, Switzerland on a flight from Bombay (Mumbai) to London. Sixteen years later, Air India Boeing 707, the "Kanchenjunga," crashed in nearly the same spot, say French authorities.
The jewels may have also come from that plane. A diplomatic bag was recovered from that flight last year. The 1966 crash was the subject of some conspiracy theories that claim it was shot down because it carried the father of India's nuclear industry, Homi Bhabha. According to a Mont Blanc tourist site, debris from both flights are routinely found at the bottom of the glacier.
