Is age the secret to creativity?

The June issue of British Journal of Photography is all about age, and more specifically its correlation with the best work produced by some of the greatest photographers of the past century, including Don McCullin, David Goldblatt, Martin Parr, and Alec Soth.

Photographers aged 19 to 100 were asked when they were at the height of their creativity, and how, as time progresses, they’ve kept their work fresh in the face of what photographer Martin Parr describes as “probably the greatest taboo subject of all” – creative decline.

Editor Simon Bainbridge states “The idea has been brewing for a while, starting with the observation that over my past 11 years editing BJP, I’ve come across relatively few photographers who, like Parr, were making interesting work in their twenties. Most hit their stride in their thirties, once they’ve got a good decade of experience behind them, and this is often the most significant work they’ll ever make.”

The June issue sets out to test this theory, and in the process question our obsession with youth. It will be on sale on 5th June and is available in print and on the iPad.

BJP now offers a monthly iPad edition available in the App Store, which contains the same articles as those published in print – albeit with extra images, text and videos.
