Gumball3000 Driver Josh Cartu Donates $60k to Tony Hawk Foundation

Josh Cartu, a self-made entrepreneur and popular Gumball3000 driver for TeamWolfpack, made an impressive $60k donation to the Tony Hawk Foundation, a charity that funds the construction of skate parks for underprivileged youth in the United States, at the 2014 Gumball3000 Rally.

The Gumball3000 urban race rally is an annual event during which celebrities race some of the world's most expensive vehicles across several continents, covering 3000 miles from Miami, Florida to Ibiza, Spain. Cartu's donation is one of the largest and most generous financial gifts ever received during the annual Gumball3000 race auction, which is held after the rally each year to raise funds for various charities.

Josh Cartu is a long time fan of Tony Hawk, the professional skater who first made a name for himself on the skateboarding circuit in the 1980s, so Cartu wanted to make a donation to a worthy cause that is dear to Tony Hawk's heart. Also, the Gumball3000 event was founded by a professional skater, Maximillion Cooper, so there is a 15 year long relationship between the professional skateboarding world and the Gumball3000, and Cartu is a fan of both.

This $60k Donation to the Tony Hawk Foundation will be used to help construct skate parks for impoverished inner city youth in America, kids who often lack spaces of their own in which to socialize and exercise, especially because local laws tend to prohibit skateboarding on city streets. Skate parks provide kids a safe--and legal--alternative to pursue their interest in and love of skateboarding.

Skateboarding is a rigorous form of exercise that promotes good health, discipline, healthy competition, team spirit and perseverance, values that children and teenagers need to succeed in school, in business and in life. As a successful independent businessman who is the President and CEO of Sandstorm Holdings, a research and development company specializing in emergent web technologies and finance, Josh Cartu embraces these values and is interested in helping kids develop life skills through fun activities like skateboarding and racing fandom.

In thanks for his $60k donation to the Tony Hawk Foundation, Josh Cartu received a special edition skateboard signed by Tony Hawk and rapper/musician Tinie Tempah displaying the lyrics to Tempah's song, "Miami2Ibiza," which commemorates the Gumball3000 race.

In addition to this substantial donation from Josh Cartu, the auction at this year's Gumball3000 raised more than $600k to help the Tony Hawk Foundation.

The Gumball3000 team is proud to provide racing entertainment that contributes to philanthropy while also promoting the thrill of skateboarding and other extreme sports to youth around the world.
