NIAAA Report Reveals Increase in American Alcoholism, Chapters Capistrano Aims to Reduce Alcohol Consumption Through Flexible Recovery Options

By expanding the opportunity for individuals to seek recovery through flexible treatment and variable lengths of stay in treatment centers, I believe that not only alcoholism rates, but overall addiction trends, will decline.
Chapters Capistrano, addiction recovery facility, responds to upward trends in alcoholism and identifies the need for greater awareness of rehabilitation options.

A recent presentation of data from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) showcases America’s extensive history of alcoholic consumption—dating back to the 1850s. While the report highlights many interesting trends in alcohol consumption throughout American history, addiction recovery center Chapters Capistrano notes that information for the past few decades should strike concern among the public.

While highly specific, the NIAAA report reveals a general upward trend in alcohol consumption—a trend that could indicate greater rates of alcoholism in America. Specifically, the NIAAA found “[in] the United States, per capita consumption of ethanol from all alcoholic beverages combined in 2012 was 2.33 gallons, representing a 2.2 percent increase from 2.28 gallons in 2011.”

Although state-by-state rankings differ as to how many people have increased drinking, Chapters Capistrano notes that the overall trends are not encouraging. For instance, the NIAAA reports, “Analysis of overall per capita alcohol consumption by census region between 2011 and 2012 indicated an increase of 3.4 percent in the West, 2.3 percent in the South, 2.1 percent in the Northeast, and 1.7 percent in the Midwest.”

Mike Shea, founder of Chapters Capistrano, responds to this evidence, “The rise in alcohol consumption is disconcerting, especially in a time when the health community has become more focused on raising awareness about substance abuse and mental health issues. The increase in alcoholic tendencies suggests that standard methods of prevention and rehabilitation—including AA—have not made a strong impact on reducing consumption. When assessed next to increases in heroin and opioid addiction, it is clear that America’s attachment to substance abuse is an serious problem that has not improved in recent years.”

The NIAAA report also takes note of the need to reduce alcohol consumption and highlights the efforts of the Healthy People 2020 initiative. The report explains, “Healthy People 2020 has set the national objective for per capita alcohol consumption at no more than 2.1 gallons. Per capita consumption would need to decrease by 1.3 percent each year for the next eight years to achieve this goal.”

While greater education to raise awareness and augment prevention efforts will play a role in reducing alcohol consumption in the coming years, Shea adds that the addiction recovery community also has a great opportunity to help achieve or exceed this goal.

“The addiction recovery community is transforming as stigmas surrounding mental health and addiction disappear with greater research and education. It is my belief that this work will help many struggling with alcohol dependency and other addictions to explore the myriad of options they have to seek recovery,” Shea states. “By expanding the opportunity for individuals to seek recovery through flexible treatment and variable lengths of stay in treatment centers, I believe that not only alcoholism rates, but overall addiction trends, will decline.”
