U.S. Employment Reports Pose Differing Outlooks, Chic Resumes Strengthens Jobseekers

Chic Resumes explains the value of a strong resume in the current job market in response to varied outlooks recently reported by the U.S. Labor Department.

Last Friday, the U.S. Labor Department reported new data regarding America’s employment situation—causing some confusion among jobseekers, employers and economists. Specifically, the latest surveys conducted by the agency have found that employment rates have increased; however, actual creation of new jobs appears to have dropped. For Chic Resumes, a professional resume writing service, these trends hint at the coming challenges for jobseekers—especially increased competition.

A recent article from The New York Times highlighted this change, citing that the discrepancies were due to the Labor Department taking two different approaches to its recent surveys. The “household” survey, for instance, found “in January 1,717,000 more people were working than were working in October, adjusted for a small change due to changes in population estimates that are made each January. That is an average monthly gain of 572,000.”

From those results, Chic Resumes notes that it may seem that employment rates are rising at a very positive pace. However, this resume writing service explains that it is important to analyze the full picture—comparing results with the “establishment” survey conducted by the Labor Department.

New York Times reports, “…the establishment survey reported that total employment rose by 462,000 jobs from October 2013 to last month, an average of 154,000. That was the smallest three-month increase since the summer of 2012.” While these results should be close to the household survey, the article explains that the establishment survey provides more in-depth results, as it bases its information off of employer reports—not individual citizens.

Amanda Clark, CEO of Chic Resumes, comments, “This evidence is interesting—and paints two different pictures. However, we are concerned with one major question: what do these figures mean for the jobseeker?”

According to Clark, these figures show that while opportunity has advanced for employment, job creation still remains slow. As a result, employment may be available to skilled professionals—but the competition may increase, especially if job growth continues to remain stagnant.

Although this data may discourage some jobseekers, Chic Resumes believes that those who are ready to get the job they want can do so—with the right tools in their arsenal.

“The Chic Resumes team is adept at scrutinizing existing resumes and job histories to help jobseekers present a stronger case to employers. A resume is often the first impression—and sometimes the last—one makes when applying for a position. We work to help applicants present themselves in a strong, competitive fashion that puts them ahead of others in today’s tight job market,” Clark concludes.
