Scottsdale, AZ - There's a major change coming in the healthcare system of the United States. Effective on October 1, 2014, the U.S. will complete the transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10, as mandated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Medical Coding and Billing students need to prepare themselves for this change, and enroll with a program which offers the appropriate training and insight on the new ICD-10 regulations. Brighton College is already including ICD-10 into its Medical Billing and Coding curriculum, which means its students will be a step ahead, and more well-prepared for the real world work environment.
The ICD-9 system has been used for quite some time, but now the numeric codes utilized for various procedures and diagnoses will be updated. The new ICD-10 standard will include nine times the amount of codes compared to the current ICD-9, a massive change and increase.
That means there's far more room for accuracy and specificity, but it also means a steeper learning curve, and a major transition for individuals already acclimated to the old system.
Yet, ICD-10 is already being utilized by the entire world. The United States is the sole remaining industrialized nation not using an ICD-10 based classification system. It's essential that the country caught up, to ensure that claims are fairly matched to reflect the latest technology and treatments, and to ensure that the healthcare industry can accurately measure the quality of care based upon the latest known conditions, and procedures.
Ultimately, ICD-10 is not only more up to date, but also more robust, and will help to enhance the entire healthcare system.
Brighton's Medical Billing and Coding online program offers students a diverse set of courses to help prepare them for certification, and great employment opportunities in the industry.
Now's the time to get started learning the new ICD-10 standard.
