Viral list building is kind of the holy grail of Internet Marketing. If you manage to find a way to create that viral reaction which seems to drive people to the signup form for your email list like moths to a flame it becomes very difficult to fail online.
The problem is of course that finding an effective viral method is not that easy. Obviously if it was everyone would be doing it.
Sometimes however it is easier to create this "viral" reaction if you focuses yourself on a sub-segment of a niche, rather than the broader niche as a whole. For example if your niche is "dieting" it can be somewhat difficult to really judge what the end goal of a web searcher actually is. You can generically say that they are trying to lose weight, but a woman trying to lose weight so she can fit into a pair of skinny jeans is not the same market segment as an overweight man who is trying to lose weight so he can show of his muscles.
Yes they are both in the dieting niche, but you certainly should not be marketing to them in the same way. You can see how creating a viral reaction in top level niches can be rather challenging. When you take a top level niche and divide it into its smaller sub-segments you can begin to formulate a plan about how to target each one individually through social media marketing and video marketing in order to generate a buzz for your list.
Once you have a buzz going you must be able deliver solid free content to the subscribers that you are marketing too. If the free content is good it will actually generate even more of a buzz that will explode your list building efforts.
