Often owners were so focused on keeping decisions and cutting down the costs, that without any preparations were giving whole business in hands of unknown freelancers from other part of the world. Of course it wasn’t always bad decision, but sometimes ended with sinking whole boat. And costs weren’t so small as promised.
It took me years to learn how to pickup great people and select skills worth improving. It is said that usually team needs at least 2-3 years to start work smoothly. Try to imagine that in your new start-up. Two years is like an age.
So what is to be done? If freelancers are not solid enough and you have no funds to hire whole HR machine and rise up team of your dreams? Answer is fairly easy – hire settled team.
I’ll mention three theses with which it’s really hard to argue:
It would take ages to skill up your new team
Imagine you want to build modern web service. Likely you’d need people good in some server scripting (PHP), some front-end workers (CSS/HTML) and guys with experience in mobile and responsive applications. And eventually they have to cooperate and understand each other to achieve your goals. Training them to do that will require extra project manager and at least months of work.
It’s hard to find better quality – price combination than in Central Europe
If you take a look at best IT teams, students winning global programming challenges huge amount of them are from Central Europe including Poland. Quite well technical education, natural will to improve and break limits, strong language skills (English is MUST HAVE here) make them very hard to compete. At the same time wages that will satisfy best are far lower than in the US, the UK or Western Europe. Talented senior developer in total costs less than 60% comparing with the UK. Customer support officer costs less than 50%. Data entry worker or medium project manager takes only 20% of UK wage. By investing half of cost of freelancers in your area, it’s very likely that in Poland you can have skilled team with infrastructure, knowledge and good practices.
You are meant to do business, team to make it work
I believe you know what you want to achieve. Likely you also have some experience in technical world. But let’s be honest. No one knows everything. You hire to expect. You want to hire best to get best results. Rather than guiding random people you should pickup specialists in proper areas, with solid background and explain them your vision. Let them build all steps of product on top of it. Using SCRUM-like methodologies good team will be able to release early and react on market. You won’t lose you chance of being unique and you’d be able to test your assumptions much faster than others.
So please, answer yourself a simple question: do you really want to build your start-up using random freelancers? If not – feel free to ask.
